The US Department of Transportation (US DOT) and National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) have announced a strategic planning effort aimed at creating a national — read that as local, county, state and federal rather than just federal government — transportation data set. This is an attempt to make real the goals of what NSGIC calls Transportation for the Nation (TFTN): “to coordinate and develop nationally significant geospatial transportation data, with particular emphasis on road centerlines.”
The strategic planning effort will include workshops and needs-requirements gathering at national conferences and other opportunities to meet with data-users. It will be managed by the USDOT GIO. The contractors working on the project are Koniag Technology Solutions, Inc. and Applied Geographics, Inc. Applied Geographics is also helping create the Delaware GIS Strategic Plan).
