TUgis Conference Ahead

Logo for the TUgis conferenceJay Morgan, from the Towson University Geographic Information Sciences Conference (TUgis), has sent along an update on that event, which is set for March 23 and 24. TUgis 2011 will be the 24th annual Towson conference. It will take place on the University Campus, in Towson, Maryland.

GIS blogger James Fee is confirmed as keynote speaker for March 23. A speaker for March 24 will be announced soon.

Presentation proposals are still welcome. The call for presentations (PDF) is open through Friday, February 11. Those presenting at TUgis are eligible for a discounted registration rate. An early (discounted) exhibitor fee for TUgis 2011 is also available through February 11.

TUgis organizers are also accepting nominations for awards through Friday, February 25. Award categories include an Award for Outstanding Contribution to GIS in Maryland and a Lifetime Achievement Award.

And entries for the TUgis map design competition are welcome through Friday, March 18.

Delaware Census Data Workshop Planned

Delaware’s Census State Data Center program will offer a Census Data Workshop on January 14 to provide training on 2010 Census data, data from the American Community Survey (ACS), the American FactFinder, and other data resources from the US Census Bureau. It will be held on Friday, January 14, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, in Room 220 of the Kent County Administration Building, at 555 Bay Road (Route 113), in Dover. The workshop is free and open to all those who are interested, though space limitations may come into play. Pre-registration is required.

December’s DGDC Meeting Will (Mostly) Be All About Web Mapping

The draft agenda (PDF) for the December 9 meeting of the Delaware Geographic Data Committee has a decidedly “web-map-y” theme.

Aside from the usual reports and updates (which will have some exciting news, he teased), DataMIL manager Sandy Schenck will lead a discussion of user needs for online Delaware Topo maps.  We’ll also have a presentation from the web-map maker from the News Journal. And we’ll hear from from scientific and web-mapping staff from DNREC about their on-line Sea Level Rise Inundation Maps.

The final quarterly DGDC meeting of 2010 will start at 9:00 a.m. in Room 220 of the Kent County Administration Building, at 555 Bay Road (Route 113), in Dover.

Delaware Users’ Group (DUG) Holds First Meeting

A new users’ group for Delaware’s ESRI-using GIS people held its first meeting on November 3, at the Kent County Administration Building, in Dover. Organizer Deborah Sullivan, of DNREC, brought together about 30 GIS professionals from state, county and local government, the University and the private sector to discuss issues specific to the use of ESRI’s ArcGIS and related products.

Mark Your Calendars: 2012 Delaware GIS Conference

Delaware GIS Conference LogoThe next edition of the Delaware GIS Conference will take place April 25 and 26, 2012, at the Dover Sheraton Inn and Conference Center, in Dover, Delaware.

The Conference Planning Committee is already hard at work planning for the semi-annual event. You should start thinking about what you want to present. or at least about what you’d like to learn about.

Watch for a call for content at some point in the future.

Now Available: NHD Training WebEx

Slide from NHD presentationThe introduction to the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) that was offered by the USGS and NSGIC yesterday is now available on-line. The training was presented by Jeff Simley, of the USGS, and included an overview of the NHD, plans to make it even better, and a discussion of the state/federal partnerships that have made the project possible.

Call for Presentations: MACURISA 2010

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of URISA has issued a Call for Presentations for the 2010 MACURISA Conference.  Conference organizers are looking for topics or case studies of interest to GIS professionals in the region.

The conference is scheduled for October 4 through 6 at the Trump Marina Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  The conference is expected to include pre-conference workshops, educational sessions, posters sessions, vendors and an interactive session.  Participation will lead to continuing education credits for GISP certification, AICP certification (pending) and from the New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors.

The deadline for abstract submissions is June 18, 2010.

Training Opportunity: The National Hydrography Dataset

The National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) plans a “virtual conference” session, via WebEx webcast, on the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) on Tuesday, April 27. We will offer two viewing opportunities for this webcast: one in Dover and one in Newark.
