Virginia GIS Strategic Plan Approved

Virginia GIS Strategic Plan CoverThe Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN) Advisory Board has approved a 2010-1015 GIS Strategic Plan (PDF).

The plan, developed under a grant from the FGDC as part of the 50 States Initiative, was approved at the January 6 meeting of the Advisory Board.

The plan includes a snapshot of the current state of GIS in Virginia, a shared vision for where the GIS community wants to go, strategic goals and next steps to take them there.

DGDC Executive Council Discusses GIS Strategic Plan and Possible New Orthos

The Executive Council of the Delaware Geographic Data Committee (DGDC) met on Thursday, December 17, 2009, and discussed a preliminary draft outline of the Delaware GIS Strategic Plan now under development by the DGDC. The Council also voted to move forward with a possible 2011 update of orthophotography for parts of Delaware.

A Meeting of the GIS Minds

Delaware’s GIS Community had a busy three days at the start of this week. A series of workshops and small-group meetings were held from October 19 through October 21 to gather input for the planned Delaware GIS Strategic Plan (funded by a grant from the Federal Geographic Data Committee).

Planning consultant Michael Terner, of Applied Geographics, met with a large group of GIS professionals from all sectors of the community on Tuesday at the Kent County Administration Building. On Wednesday, the DGDC Executive Committee held a workshop at the Haslet Armory. Also on Wednesday, there was a meeting with the University of Delaware’s GIS group.

And, while he was here, Mr. Terner met in small-groups with 911/PSAP administrators, county GIS staff, city GIS managers, MPO staff, the Department of Technology and Information, the Department of Safety and Homeland Security, the Governor’s Office, the Office of State Planning Coordination, and DelDOT.

Delaware has some of the best GIS people in the nation. They work at the state, county and city levels; in the private sector; and in the schools and universities. We’re a small but close-knit community of professionals who work well together, share data, and help each other serve our customers, clients and constituents.

But we know we can do even better. That’s why we’ve embarked on a journey of self-discovery and improvement: we’re writing a GIS Strategic Plan for Delaware and we need your help.

Please join in a comprehensive, strategic planning process for GIS and geospatial data in Delaware.

DGDC Executive Council Meeting

The Executive Council of the Delaware Geographic Data Committee will meet on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, starting at 10:00 a.m. in Room 133 of the Haslet Armory, in Dover.

The meeting will focus on the GIS Strategic Planning Process and will serve to brief the Council on the findings of individual interviews, small-group meetings, and the statewide workshop conducted by the planning consultant. This will also be an opportunity for Council members to add their own thoughts to the process.

The Haslet Armory is at 122 William Penn Street, in Dover.
